Mrs. Maggie Sheffield Smartt
1913 - 2015

Our Beloved Diamond Member Maggie J. Sheffield Smartt, 102, became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on August 28, 2015 at the Hospice of Chattanooga. A Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Smartt was initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter in 1935, serving 80 years on the local and regional level. She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Tennessee State University and later earned a Masters Degree from Atlanta University. She did additional studies at Georgia State College, Hampton Institute, Virginia School of Arts Institution, University of Tennessee, Tennessee Technical University and Southern Missionary College. Mrs. Smartt was the first black President of the Chattanooga Retired Teachers Association. Funeral services were held on September 4, 2015 at 11 am at Warren Chapel AME Church, where she was a faithful member.

Mrs. Doris Bruce Kelly
1917 - 2021

Our Beloved Diamond Member Doris Bruce Kelly, 103, became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on April 19, 2021. Mrs. Kelly was initiated into the Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 1938. A Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Kelly served Pi Omega in various capacities, including Vice President and Secretary. She received her Bachelor of Science and Masters Degrees from Tennessee State University. She did additional Postgraduate studies at the University of Tennessee, University of North Dakota, Middle Tennessee State University and Northwestern University. She attained numerous professional awards, and she celebrated her 75th anniversary with the sorority in 2013. Funeral services were held on April 29, 2021 at 11 am in the chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home.

In 2023, the Chattanooga City Council honored Mrs. Kelly with a commemorative street sign at the intersection of Tennessee and West 46th in St. Elmo. This was unveiled during an official naming ceremony on February 22, 2023. Mrs. Kelly was a St. Elmo resident who spent more than 100 years in the community.
